　Backinthe1930s,therewasamancalledLaurensHammond,anelectronics
engineer,inventorandinnovator.Attheageof14,hehaddesignedan
automatictransmissionmechanismformotorcars(whichwasrejectedbyRenault!)
andlaterwouldinvent,in1922,a3Dmovieplaybacksystemaswellasaclock
motor.

However,heisbestknownforthepatenthetookoutin1934foratonewheel
organwhichwastobecome,ofcourse,theB3andC3andvariousothermodels.

In1939,however,Hammondreleasedsomethingaltogetherdifferent-theworld's
firstpolyphonicsynthesiser.

Yes-youreadthatcorrectly...afullypolyphonicsynthesiser...in1939!!

Usingdivide-downoscillators(theworld'sfirst?),theNovachordwasfully
polyphonic.Theoscillatorspassthroughresonators,hi-andlo-passfiltersand
asimplebuteffectiveenvelopeshaper.Whatisparticularlyimpressiveisthat
theNovachordhadLFOsandenvelopeshapersforeveryoneofits72-notessothat
theinstrumentwasTOTALLYpolyphonic!Thisisactuallyveryimpressiveaseven
stringsynths40yearsitsjuniorsuchastheARPOmni,MoogPolyMoog,etc.,were
paraphonic-i.e.allvoicessharingasingleLFO/envelope.Thismeansthat
combinedwiththehugepolyphony,sixoctavesandasuperbsustaincontrol,youcan
combinemassivechordsandarpeggioswithnochanceofnotestealing.Theelectronic
architecturethatmakesthispossibleisbeautifullyeleganttoo.Italsohasvibrato
butnotlikethetypefoundonanaloguesynths-instead,themodulationispolyphonic
whichimpartsarichensembleeffecttoitssounds.

However,itwasasurefirehitwiththemovieandTVindustrywhouseditin
soundtracksprimarilyfortheeeriesoundsitcouldcreateanditshauntingsoundcould
beheardinmoviesasdiverseas'GoneWithTheWind','TheMalteseFalcon'and'Rebecca'
tosci-ficlassicssuchas'ItCameFromOuterSpace'.'ThisIslandEarth','TheBeast
From20,000Fathoms'andothers.ItalsofeaturedinTVprogramssuchas'TheTwilght
Zone','TheOuterLimits'and'VoyageToTheBottomOfTheSea'.Itwasalsousedin
'HawaiiFive-O'.BookhimDanno!

Despiteallthis,unfortunately,liketheTheremin,itfailedtogain'serious'musical
credibilitybecauseitwasseenassomethingofanovelty.However,DameVeraLynn,the
forces'sweetheart,wasacccompaniedononebyArthurYounginseveralofthewartime
songssherecordedincluding'We'llMeetAgain'.ArthurYoungalongwithDimitriTiomkin,
ElmerBernsteinandJerryGoldsmithtooktheinstrumentseriouslyandGoldsmithwasusing
oneaslateas1966.

Only1,069wereevermade.Productionstoppedin1941whenpartsweredifficulttoget
holdofduetothewareffortofWWII.Itneverwentbackintoproductionafterhostilities
ceased.Unfortunately!ImaginehowelectronicmusicmighthavebeenhadHammondcontinued
withthisamazinginstrument-itwouldhavehada20yearheadstart.Likesomany
innovations,itwasaheadofitstimeandmostpeoplecouldn'tunderstandit.

Veryfewremaintodayandevenfewerareinworkingorder.

However,HollowSunisdraggingthisphenomenalinstrumentintothepresentdayinitsunique
samplesetwhichbringstherichandhauntingsonoritiesoftheNovachordintothe21st
century...where(arguably)itbelongs.

TheNovachordinquestion(serial#346)belongstooneDanWilsonofBath,England.Aswell
asbeinganaccomplishedmusowithanimpressivestudio,heisalsosomethingofanelectronics
whizzandislovinglyrestoringhisinstrument.Danisavoidingreplacingcomponentswithmodern
equivalentsbecausethatcanadverselyaffectthesound.Instead,heisfixingtheoriginalsso
thattheinstrument'ssoundiscarefullypreserved.

ItisunknownhowmanyworkingNovachordsareinexistencetodaybutthisisalmostcertainly
theonlyoneintheUK.

Thetexturesareunbelievable-quiteunlikeanythingwe'veheard,Vaguelyfamiliarandreminiscent
ofmodernsynthsbutwitha'quality'that,likethislibrary,istotallyunique.

Thetechnologyofthetime,however,wassuchthatinsideherthereisastaggeringnumberof
valves(163)andcapacitors(over1,000)andmilesofwiring.Togetasenseofproportion,below
isapictureofLaurensHammondcalibratingoneboardofaNovachord!
Butreactiontothismagnificentinstrumentwasmixedatthetime.

Traditionalmusicianscouldn'tgrasptheconceptbecauseitwasn'tapiano(eventhoughitlooked
alittlelikeoneinitsmagnificentwoodencabinet)andthosewhohadembracedHammond'stonewheel
organswereconfusedbecauseitwasn'tanorganeither.Assuch,mostpeopledidn'tknowquitewhat
tomakeofitorwhattodowithit.

Hammondtriedtosellitasa'homeentertainment'instrumentclaimingitcouldmakeanysoundof
theorchestra!!!Errrmmm...aboldclaimandobviouslytheydidn'thaveaTradesDescriptionAct
backthen.ButthatclaimwasenoughtogettheUSMusician'sUnioninapanicwhichimposed
limitationsonhowitcouldbeusedinrecordingsessions.theycouldn'tbanitoutrightbecause,
ironically,thatwouldrestricttheirmembers'abilitytoworkbecauseanMUmemberwouldbeneeded
toplayit!
